Child Health Study Center
The Center for Child Health, formerly known as the Pediatric Research Office or PRO, was initially an individual research by lecturers in the Child Health Science (IKA) department, Faculty of Medicine, Gadjah Mada University (FK- UGM)/ Dr. Sardjito General Hospital with research areas including diarrhea, tuberculosis and dengue. The research at that time had been conducted together with international institutions such as the Rockefeller Foundation and with world-renowned scientists such as Prof. John Rohde and Prof. Ruth Bishop. In 2006, the research of these lecturers then merged as a sub-unit of the IKA section called the Child Health Science Research Office (Litika).

Its focus is on improving the health, growth, and development across the lifespan of populations in Indonesia and around the world, including mothers and infants, families, adolescents, women, older people, and populations with special health care needs. The Center’s research interests cover a broad spectrum of topics, including: a) maternal and child health promotion (i.e., safe-motherhood and child survival interventions); b) population and family planning programs and policies; c) prevention and control of STIs and HIV/AIDS infection; d) social and economic development in relation to reproductive health status; e) health policy, program planning, and evaluation; f) demography; and g) design and financing of health care systems in relation to reproductive health issues. The Center for Reproductive Health has been building a community and health and nutrition research laboratory (Central Health and Nutrition-Research Laboratory/CHN-RL) since late 1994. CHN-RL has been used to facilitate faculty and student research, as well as efforts to test new interventions and training areas for government employees.
CHN-RL is based in Purworejo District, offering opportunities to gain experience in large-scale data collection and analysis of population and clinical-based epidemiological studies. CHN-RL is a member of the INDEPTH network, which connects scientists working in population and demography worldwide. Graduate students in the Center’s affiliated departments come from a variety of backgrounds. Many students come from health centers, BKKBN, the Ministry of Health and other educational institutions.
The Center for Reproductive Health team members generate scientific knowledge and public health ideas through their research, strengthen technical and leadership skills through educational programs, and enhance national capacity through collaborative projects, including collaborations with other developing countries (e.g., the INDEPTH and INCLEN networks) and developed countries (e.g., Johns Hopkins University, Umea University Sweden, and UCLA). The Center for Reproductive Health applies and develops methods drawn from demography, biostatistics, epidemiology, nutrition, developmental psychology, sociology, health services research, economics, communication science, policy analysis, behavioral sciences and related disciplines in research and professional practice.
