Digna Niken Purwaningrum, S.Gz, MPH, Ph.D is a lecturer in the Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Population Health, Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Nutrition and Health and a master’s degree in Public Health from Universitas Gadjah Mada, and earned her Ph.D. in Public Health Nutrition from the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Sydney, Australia.

Her academic and research interests focus on public health nutrition, maternal and child nutrition, stunting prevention, obesity prevention and control, food consumption behavior, and nutrition-related health policy. Over the past several years, she has been actively involved in national research and technical assistance projects addressing stunting reduction, obesity prevention strategies, maternal nutrition interventions, and integrated health planning at district and village levels.

Digna Niken has published her research in reputable international and national journals, including Public Health Nutrition, Nutrition and Health, and the Indonesian Journal of Clinical Nutrition. She is also a frequent speaker at international scientific conferences and has contributed to policy-oriented books and guidelines related to non-communicable disease prevention, stunting mitigation, and maternal and child health in Indonesia.

Research

Dr. Purwaningrum’s research focuses on public health nutrition issues in vulnerable population. She is particularly interested in behavioral context related to nutritional status, particularly in disadvantaged settings.
Her past research projects include health seeking behavior study in poor and near poor population, that seek to understand how family members considered available options for disease treatment and eventually decided the most appropriate strategy. She also studied how the local health system adapted to some changes and how program planning was tailored to a specific setting.
For her PhD thesis, she worked on behavioral nutrition in the context of double burden of malnutrition at family level. She explored the dynamics relationship between mothers and children through qualitative and quantitative approaches. She continues to work with international partners in investigating the issue of double burden of malnutrition.
Area of research/interests: public health nutrition, behavioral nutrition, nutrition epidemiology, health system strengthening.

Service Activities

Dr. Purwaningrum assists the Ministry of Health – Republic of Indonesia in developing integrated planning for maternal and child health program. Previously, she worked on similar tasks in partnership with UN agency at some districts in Papua, East Nusa Tenggara, and East Java province in Indonesia, and also in the Democratic Republic of Timor Leste.
She is a reviewer for national and international journals in the area of public health nutrition.
